The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association - Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL) is launching a BRAND NEW online learning course called Read Our Lips.

Read Our Lips is the first of its kind in Canada and offers 8 online lessons to teach lip and speech reading techniques. This online, self-paced e-learning course will be available to anyone with access to a computer, tablet or smart phone and high speed internet access.

Why Is This Important?

1 in 5 adult Canadians over the age of 19 experience hearing challenges that can affect daily communication. This number increases with age.

Improving your ability to see what someone is saying helps to improve communication in daily life, especially at times when there is background noise, like in coffee shops, restaurants, at family gatherings, and in meetings. It is a key part of communication for those with hearing loss.

Communication means feeling connected.

When we can see what's being said, we feel a part of what's happening.

We believe that the antidote to isolation is inclusion; that everyone should be empowered to partake in the stories that weave the fabric of our lives.

Speechreading can be life changing.  That's why we made a safe, accessible online space to learn how at your own pace. We're not just teaching, we're helping open doors to a more confident life.

See speech, feel connected. ‚Äč

Please join us for a 30 minute online information session (webinar) introducing the Read Our Lips course to learn:

  • the benefits of speech (lip) reading practice for hearing rehabilitation and improving daily communication,
  • the importance of treating hearing loss for mental and physical health,
  • a preview of the Read Our Lips online course.

11:30 AM  - Noon (NST) (10:00 am Eastern)

A recording of the Webinar will be provided to those who sign up.

This Information Session Is For:

  • healthcare & helping professionals
  • professionals and community groups/organizations working with individuals with hearing loss
  • professionals and community groups/organizations working with those ages 50+
  • those interested in learning more about supporting individuals with hearing loss

The Read Our Lips online course allows users to:

  • Learn and practice lipreading (an important part of overall speechreading) at their own pace from the comfort of their own home.

  • Feel more confident about their ability to communicate in challenging listening environments, like in noise, by learning to identify 8 lip movements (one per lesson) that are the most visible to see (or "read") on the lips.

  • Feel more connected to conversations and the world around them. Video lessons (with captions for hearing accessibility) and video skills practice that includes both words and sentences help users start, or build on, their ability to identify lip movements.
